Introduction
An award-winning studio with offices in both Taiwan and Australia, Reno Studios is a truly international company. Seeking to strengthen its roots at home, Reno Studios recently constructed a state-of-the-art LED virtual studio at the Taiwan’s Central Motion Picture Corporation studio lot. This virtual studio will offer directors and producers greater creative freedom, giving them full control over the backdrops that they use in their productions. The LED virtual studio will also streamline the production process, shorten turnaround times, and allow creators to develop stronger content while avoiding ballooning budgets. It marks a huge step forward for Taiwan’s burgeoning film industry.
- World-class LED technology for filmmaking
- Immersive settings for media creation
- Shorter post-production turnaround times
- Streamlined filming and production process
- Unlimited creative possibilities
Challenge
As we head into the middle of the decade, two trends in film production are rapidly becoming apparent. First, the rise of streaming services has led to greater demand for new content. This, along with the fact that consumers are also eager to return to theaters to watch blockbuster films, has put unprecedented pressure on film production companies. Secondly, both in response to this increasing demand and as a natural result of advancements in technology, virtual film production is going mainstream. Production companies will find that they either need to embrace this technology, or they will struggle to keep pace in an extremely competitive market.
With LED virtual production technology, companies like Reno Studios can simplify the production process. Compared to traditional green screens, LED virtual production technology offers greater feedback for actors and also lets VFX artists get a head start on producing environments before filming has even begun. It’s a technological advancement that is revolutionizing the film industry.
With the goal of building an LED virtual studio to bolster Taiwan’s film industry, Reno Studios consulted with companies in the display hardware space. They sought out a committed partner that could provide products that would consistently meet the standards of filmmakers as well as excellent post-sales support.
Solution
To create its flagship LED virtual production solution, Reno Studios cooperated with AUO Corporation, a leader in display technology. Combining 380 P1.95 LED panels, Reno Studios and AUO constructed a roofed, semicircular 180-degree LED soundstage that’s 5 meters tall and 12 meters in diameter.
More Immersive than Ever Before
As a consistent innovator in the field of display technology, AUO is one of the companies in the world that has access to all the equipment needed to produce a LED virtual studio. For Reno Studios, AUO could provide curved panels that delivered impeccable video quality, with ample brightness, contrast, and color saturation – the characteristics necessary for LED virtual production. Thanks to the incredible clarity of the virtual backdrops, actors feel more immersed in the scene, and directors and film crews have a better sense of what the final cut will look like. The benefits of virtual production also trickle down to the end user, who can find greater enjoyment in media that feels more complete and cohesive than anything they’ve previously experienced.
Unlimited Creative Possibilities
Innovators at Reno Studios see that LED virtual production technology is the future. In effect, this tech lets smaller production companies punch above their weight, by providing them with tools and locales that used to only be available to the biggest of blockbuster films. Virtual production also eliminates weather, climate, and time restrictions when filming. Film crews no longer have to wait for the perfect weather to appear, and no longer have to leave the semi tropical climate of Taiwan when they want to film a more temperate landscape. With LED virtual production technology, the full range of climate conditions is available right in studio.
Dedicated Partnership
AUO Corporation and Reno Studios both benefit from this tight partnership. AUO Corporation is always searching for up-and-coming fields where its expertise and experience can be applied, and is eager to work long-term with Reno Studios to continue developing hardware and software that will advance the possibilities of LED virtual production. Furthermore, AUO is always ready to pick up the phone and provide extra assistance should the need arise. By committing to a deep collaboration, all partners benefit.
Result
Everyone involved is excited about how the new LED virtual studio will transform Taiwan’s film industry. Peter Huang, COO at Reno Studios, stated that by combining AUO’s advanced ALED technology with Reno Studios’ professional visual effects design capabilities, filmmakers will be able to produce works that captivate audiences like never before. What immersive new worlds will film directors bring to theaters next? With LED virtual production, the possibilities are truly limitless.
